Tenerife’s terrible away form continues with Mirandés defeat

Tenerife’s appalling away record in the Spanish 2nd Division continues to plunge the side deeper into relegation trouble as the season enters its final third.

Monday night’s loss at Mirandés (2-0) means that the Canarians have failed to record a single win away from home since August, picking up just three points out of a possible 45 on the road – easily the worst record in the league.

Relegation to the ranks of semi-professional football in Spain’s third tier, known as Primera RFEF, is now certain and a massive clear-out of players is already being prepared.

Manager Alvaro Cervera put on a brave face after last night’s defeat to Mirandés, focusing on what he described as a relatively good first 60 minutes against the division’s third-placed side. However, he admitted that the last half hour was very poor.

Cervera also said that he had never experienced such a prolonged situation in his many years in management: ‘Usually, there is a turning point in fortunes, but it is simply not happening. You could almost have written the script for this fixture before it began. We start well, we make life difficult for our opponents but then an individual moment comes along in the game that always proves our downfall (in this case a penalty conceded by forward Enric Gallego) and that is the end.’
