Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be bigger and better than ever thanks to a massive increase in the budget for key infrastructure improvements.
City mayor José Manuel Bermúdez says that the council has earmarked an unprecedented 170 million euros for improvements for the period 2024-2025 and the results will make the island capital a better place to live and visit.
Projects underway as part of the city’s ambitious Investment Plan include the renovations to one of Santa Cruz’s historic buildings, the early 19th century Masonic Temple (one of the finest in Spain in its day), which are due to finish in the summer. A major revamp of the Viera y Clavijo Park is also underway to remedy the extensive deterioration suffered in recent years. In addition, several bridges in the city will be repaired and resurfaced and the centre’s network of cycle lanes will be extended and upgraded. Improvements to Santa Cruz’s iconic Las Teresitas beach, where the breakwater has already been modernised, are also on the cards and include a promenade and new lighting and drains. Bermúdez added also that a big new leisure area is planned near the capital’s Palmetum gardens and the seafront Avenida de Anaga is to undergo a complete makeover.
“Santa Cruz us very much on the up but we cannot rest on our laurels, which is why we are spending such a big part of the council budget on these works” insisted the mayor, who outlined the infrastructure projects that will receive the 170 million euro funding at a special event held in the capital’s prestigious Casino club.
